Social media has become a major presence in all aspects of the market place and it’s not just big businesses that are communicating with customers this way. More than 260,000 small businesses in the US and Canada employ social networking tactics, too. Social media can enhance training through its ability to communicate and track by subscription providing the learner greater avenues of information than ever before.

Social media forums have become hubs for sharing links to longer articles, discussions, posts, videos - anything that lives behind a URL. Websites that once saw their traffic dominated by Google search queries are seeing a growing number of new visitors coming from “passed links” at social networks like Twitter and Facebook. It’s easy to use these networks anytime, anywhere via laptop, phone or PDA to spread the word about an interesting a new product, a project, business prospect or the best lunch spots in town. How has your organization leveraged the power of social media?

Together social networks, live searching and link-sharing are an interesting alternative to Google’s near monopoly in searching. In Google, pages rise to the top of the search results according to how many links point to them, which tends to favor older pages that have had time to build an audience. This is an excellent resource for finding credible history, published articles, etc, but if you want to know what is hot and new right NOW then social media is your best option.

Social Media has brought new dimension to the business climate; featuring a completely unique way to capture leads, offer live conversation and feedback during meetings or conferences, and to consistently bring fresh information to your “friends” for FREE! Tim Ferriss: Fascinating guy who calls his blog “experiments in life design.”  I can’t figure out how to sum up who he is and what he does - I suggest you check out his “about” page, which uses words like “spearfishing”, “4 hour work week”, “Fast Company’s “Most Innovative Business People of 2007″, “experimental social media campaigns”, “Technology Summit” and “innovation”.  I’ve picked up more than a few tips & tricks, as well as a collection of bookmarked links, through him.

PANMA:  If you live in the Philly area and don’t know PANMA, you should.  The Philadelphia tech community is like no other - go to their website and sign up for the listserv.  If you’ve ever taken a class with me, you’ll remember that PANMA is one of the first things I talk about  - it’s a fabulous community of knowledgeable tech people who are more than willing to jump in and help you out or answer any question you might have.
